Canadian Black Youth Action for Change

Home/Event & Programs/Canadian Black Youth Action for Change

Since the arrival of Mathieu Da Costa, black Canadians have made significant contributions to Canada’s heritage and growth. Da Costa’s impact on Canada can be traced back to the early 1600s. Black Canadians in Canada come from a variety of backgrounds and have had a wide range of experiences. While some can trace their roots in Canada back many generations, others have only recently immigrated. It is fair to say that they have had a significant impact on the country in terms of development, diversity, our history, and our Canadian identity.

According to Statistics Canada, Toronto has the country’s largest black population, with 442,015 people accounting for 36.9% of the country’s black population. Working with both the United Nations’ International Decade for People of African Descent (which began in 2015 and will conclude in 2024) and Black History Month 2020, the Sylvenie Lindor Foundation calls for more concrete action from all levels of government to address issues pertaining to the integration of Canadian black youth. The Toronto Youth Action for Change (TYAC) aims to reach out to and engage approximately 2000 Canadian black youth through ACTION for CHANGE.

The TYAC will address some of the issues that Canadian youth face in the Queen City, with the goal of fostering economic integration and social inclusion through entrepreneurship and leadership skills. Some of these difficulties are related to the justice system, language barriers, unemployment, and poverty.
Furthermore, our foundation wishes to thank the Ministry of Canadian Heritage and the Canadian government for their collaboration on the TYAC project. The International Decade for People of African Descent is an incredible initiative in which we strongly believe. Working on this initiative in our own country, Canada, contributes to the global effort to recognize the contributions of the black community from the past to the present. We are confident that this initiative will continue to progress in the right direction until its completion in 2024.

Sincerely,

Team Sylvenie Lindor Foundation

MATHIEU D’ACOSTA SESSION

Let’s talk about Entrepreneurship and Leadership. Feb 2020.

Youth Leadership is a program designed to help young people become leaders in their communities. The Foundation engages volunteers and many youth ambassadors to help them develop skills and become more involved in the community. We believe that leadership skills are critical and that our youth have the potential to make a difference in the community by developing fundamental skills. There is also the element of belonging, in which we want our youth to feel as if they are part of a community. We have seen the youth we work with feel a sense of belonging by being a part of the Foundation because it is a close-knit group. Our youth have embarked on a path to a better future by developing important leadership skills that prioritize civic engagement as well as educational and career opportunities.
